US to send first cabinet member to Taiwan in 6 years The US secretary for health and human services, Alex Azar, would visit Taiwan in the next few days to congratulate its government on its response to the coronavirus pandemic, Washington announced on Tuesday. The department said in a statement that Mr Azar would be the first US cabinet member to visit Taiwan in six years, and the highest level official visitor from Washington since 1979. Taiwan has been a model of transparency and cooperation in global health during the COVID-19 pandemic and long before it. This trip represents an opportunity to strengthen our economic and public health cooperation with Taiwan. SECRETARY ALEX AZAR (@SECAZAR) August 5, 2020 “Taiwan has been a model of transparency and cooperation in global health during the Covid-19 pandemic and long before it,” Mr Azar said in the statement. Mr Azar "will meet his Taiwan counterparts, Covid-19 responders and experts, and other Taiwan partners to discuss the Covid-19 response, global health, the US-Taiwan partnership, and Taiwan’s role as a reliable global supplier of medical equipment and critical technology", the statement said.
