The Dutch parliament on Thursday passed a non-binding motion that called Beijing’s treatment of members of the ethnic Uighur minority in the west region of Xinjiang a “genocide”.

The Netherlands is the first European country to approve such a motion. Earlier this week, the Canadian parliament approved a similar measure and called for the International Olympic Committee to move the 2022 winter games from Beijing.

“A genocide on the Uighur minority is occurring in China,” the Dutch motion said, stopping short of directly saying that the Chinese government was responsible.
