Some of the leading universities in Canada have been told to stop partnerships with Chinese institutions because of concerns that Beijing is using the relationships to advance its military and intelligence capabilities.

The order that universities in Alberta cut further ties with Chinese organisations follows a sharp deterioration in relations since 2018 between the two countries and concerns among the Five Eyes intelligence sharing network of Western allies that Beijing is combing the globe for technology with civilian and military value.
