China has sentenced the brother of a leading Uighur activist to life imprisonment, the latest in a string of punishments meted out to his family and those of other exiles.

Hushtar Isa, 48, has been in an internment camp since 2017 after being accused of “inciting terrorism”, but has only recently been handed a life sentence. His brother, Dolkun Isa, 53, is the co-founder and president of the World Uighur Congress (WUC), a Munich-based organisation instrumental in drawing attention to the plight of the 13 million Turkic minority in China’s northwestern Xinjiang province.

While Dolkun has lived outside the country since 1994 and is a prominent critic of the Chinese Communist Party, Hushtar stayed in Xinjiang despite also being arrested in 1998.
