I enjoyed reading your comparison of Schopenhauer and Schumpeter--two thinkers I haven't yet read much from. I'm also reminded of the Austrian "time preference" theory of interest. The implication of that theory seems to be that not only do we have infinite wants but that we have infinite wants right now, that if left to our own devices we would consume all our wealth immediately. It is only because some people want things more "urgently" than others, that the others will forgo a lesser quantity of "present goods" for a greater quantity of "future goods."
