The vanishing world - NYT

"I know that when my daughter sees smoke again this summer from the next wildfire, she will feel no sadness, and I will wrap her in a hug that says all is well. She doesn’t know that these skies are abnormal, that we rarely saw smoke like this here when I was a child — or, really, until two years ago. But here is another example of shifting baseline syndrome, in which each new generation takes as normal the diminished world it inherits."
